Collecting and drying the wood is the beginning of the process. It is heavy noisey work. A chain saw, hand truck, and hard work are the norm. |

If not truck it home, unload, cut it smaller with the chainsaw, wax the ends to prevent rapid moisture loss. |
Pick out a few pieces for the bandsaw, cut blanks appropriate to the grain structure in the log, you decide small bowl, large bowl, candle stick, or pen; it depends on your imagination and your reading of the wood. Now choose to set it aside to dry, or turn it green to a rough size and then dry. Patience is now your friend, typically you will wait a minimum of 6 months before touching it again with the lathe and tools. |
